Title: Introducing deaf children to the mainstreamed classroom through literature
Author: Seleen, Shannon
Abstract: This project creates a product that teachers can use in the classroom to help introduce a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student to a mainstream class. As I started researching I discovered that there was are no similar products and that many teachers are not aware of deafness and the related issues. In order to create a children's book to help address this gap, I took a class about how to write children's books. For background I researched why Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are mainstreamed, as well as the problems with integrating Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. I then wrote my book. My book still needs to be tested with a real classroom before it can be submitted for publishing. Finally, I have included some additional resources for the teacher to explore.
