Title: Vacuum ultraviolet modification of polymers

Abstract: Helium and argon arc plasmas rotating in a magnetic field were used as a source of vacuum-ultraviolet radiation (VUV) for modifying polymer surfaces. Surface modification was examined for treated samples of poly (tetraf luoroethylene) (PTFE), fluorinated ethylenepropylene copolymer (FEP), polyimide (PI) and poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) . Weight loss and contact angle experiments were carried out for polymers exposed to arcs of various parameters and exposure times. Additional experiments were carried out using various UV filters positioned against the exposed polymer surface to determine the photon energies necessary to induce polymer modification.
