Title: Energy guides as teaching aids
Author: Farnsworth, David
Abstract: One of the many challenges of teaching, especially on the lower level, is that of motivation. Thus, problems that students recognize as meaningful in life are of great help in the classroom. This problem could be used in algebra or a statistics course to provide motivation. The following analysis has students calculating appliance efficiency using basic arithmetic, and they can take this problem home to their own appliances as well as apply these skills to their future purchases.
