dc.description.abstract Recent studies on the statistics of the envelope of the ultrasound echo signal from a random scattering medium suggest that the statistical moments of the signal may carry quantitative information about the scattering microstructure. The concept of effective cell volume and its relationship to the system's point spread function is established. The influence of the imaging system's point spread function on the statistical moments is considered. A microstructure is probed experimentally with multiple bandwidth pulses with center frequency matched to the transducer center frequency. Variation of the second normalized intensity moment with the cell volume is considered and exploited experimentally for structure characterization. To estimate the effective cell volume, independent point spread function measurements at different bandwidths are performed. Two parameters, the slope and the intercept of the normalized second intensity moments versus the inverse of the effective cell volume prove to be useful features of the scattering microstructure. en_US
